The Setting:
A Track day at Silverstone circuit organised by BookaTrack.

Robert's account

Well, the day started with a huge shock (other than my alarm going off at 6am!) ..... it was raining , and raining pretty hard! I had the collways (semi slicks) on the track car and was trailering it up using my new purchase, a 2.8 turbo Sierra estate. After a few balance issues with the trailer which called for a few stops on the way we arrived at Silverstone. By the time we had signed on and had the briefing I had only 5 minutes to get the car off the trailer for the first session .... the tyres would have to stay on!

Strangly it was pretty slippery on track, I was getting massive understeer from the collways, but at least I wasn't missing a session and a good chance to learn the track. But then half way through the session the car started missfiring very badly I pulled into the pits, looked over the engine, there was nothing obvious, all leads were still on so I took it out for another lap ..... the car barely made it back to the pits

I decided that the car could have got damp in the engine bay so put the car in one of the garages and started to change the wheels for some more appropriate tyres! My next session I did in the estate .... very ammusing the back end was all over the place, at least it wasn't understeering. After a few laps I got the idea of where the track was going, but as for racing lines ... I had no idea my concentration was going on keeping the car on the track!

After the session I finished off changing the wheels but when I took the car for a spin there seemed to be a massive electrical failure, missfiring, wipers going very slow, the battery was new so I suspect the alternator was soaked in spray while the car was on the trailer at least I still had the tow car to use

I was now getting the hang of the soaked track in the estate and was managing to get past quite a few cars including the standard Elises, Caterfields etc etc and the best way through brooklands (the last long right hander) was just to keep some power on and slide the car all the way round .... very funny indeed, just a shame there were no mounts for the camera as it would have made some good footage!

It was a good day in the end, a shame it was wet all day as I don't feel I got to know the track very well, but it was fun sliding the car around ...... perhaps I should do a rally day instead
